Whether or not you’re experienced at hanging traditional wallpaper, it’s important to know the installation process. Learning about the different steps it takes to execute your new design project will help you prepare your rooms for their new look.
Types & Styles of Wallpaper
Wallshoppe carries several wallpaper types, which each have specific requirements for installation. In this tutorial, we’ll explain how to hang pasted wallpaper rolls, which include our Traditional & Kraft wall coverings. And while Grasscloth falls into the ‘pasted’ category, we’ve created a separate guide on how to hang natural fiber wallpaper, as there are some slight variations in that process. Or, if you’re looking for a more straightforward installation process, you might consider choosing a removable wallpaper design for a simple peel and stick project.
Regardless of which style or type you choose, it’s important to know how to prepare a clean, uncluttered space for you or the professional paper hanger who will be working in your home for perhaps a few days, or longer depending on the size of your project.
Prepping Your Walls
Once you’ve decided on your fabulous new wallpaper design(s), it’s time to measure the designated wall(s) in order to purchase the correct amount of wallpaper. Next, it’s time to fill in old nail holes and blemishes, and smooth out any rough areas. Then you’re ready to clean the walls to remove dirt and dust, leaving a clean surface for the wallpaper. While you’re waiting for the walls to dry, you can assemble the tools you’ll need for installation. In addition to the wallpaper and wallpaper adhesive or paste, you’ll also need other necessary tools to get this project started:
- Utility knife and scissors to cut the paper
- Wallpaper brush
- Seam roller to smooth out any air bubbles and wrinkles
- Tape measure
- Level and pencil to align the correct wallpaper placement
- Sturdy stepladder
- Drop cloth or plastic sheeting to protect the flooring
- Sponge and bucket
- Putty knife
This is when you’re beginning to think it’s easier and less expensive to hire a professional for the job, but we’ll address that a little bit later.
Pasting the Wallpaper Rolls
Now that the walls are clean, they’re ready for their fresh new look.
- Begin by measuring your first piece of wallpaper and cut to the appropriate size.
- Apply a layer of adhesive to the wall or paper, (when using grasscloth wallpaper, it’s recommended to apply the paste to the paper and let it sit for 30 minutes before hanging), and starting from the top, work your way down the wall, smoothing out bubbles or creases with a brush or roller.
- Trim off any excess wallpaper with the utility knife.
- Rub the wallpaper with a soft cloth or sponge to ensure it is securely attached to the wall. Continue with the next panel using the same techniques until all the intended surfaces are covered.
- Allow the wallpaper to dry completely, (at least 24 hours), before adding any decorations or furniture.
And voila; your wallpaper dream has become a reality.
Prefer a Professional?
Now that you’ve familiarized yourself with the How-to’s of installing traditional wallpaper, you may have also realized that this is a job better suited for a professional. You want to achieve the results you know could only happen if an expert was handling the work. A hired, professional wallpaper hanger will be able to measure your walls correctly, and hang the wallpaper efficiently, without damage during installation.
Finding the right professional paper hanger depends on a few factors. First, you should research paper hangers in your area and take time to read reviews and ask for references. Once you have narrowed down your list of potential hangers, you should meet with each one in person and discuss the specific project you need completed. Ask for an estimate, and compare the prices and services offered by each.
